Last week I had one of those nights that despite my heavy eyes and incessant yawning, I needed to take the long way home.
There was something about the light fog hovering above the highway, the sound of the tires on the damp roads and the perfect music, that made my exit come too soon.
I know I drive too fast and play my music too loud but I like to pretend no one can hear or see me behind my mobile glass walls. Inevitably I will catch the eye of a stranger watching me while I sing loud with a little too much conviction for such a casual setting. I won't let it squelch my spirit, I know they are jealous they aren't doing the same and letting the music and the mood carry them away. Perhaps their momentary encounter with me will inspire them to let go and sing their soul.
You may or may not know that I am married to a very practical and calculated man. An extreme opposite and nice balance to my whimsical, emotional and formerly spontaneous self. I don't think it makes any sense to him to take the long way home or sing so loud you can't hear the ambulance approaching from behind. He is a freeway, straight line, no back tracking kind of guy.
Me, I have a little variation to my driving route when we are not sharing a vehicle. I am a surface street, drive through the pretty part of town, do a drive by of friend's house, kind of girl. Add the right music to the mix and I may never get home.
Usually I like to drive to my "singable show tunes" play list because lets be honest, Timmy was right when he called me out as only liking music I can sing to. In this moment, I am ready accept my musical reality and I find no shame in it. Music is better with singing.
It isn't that I like the sound of my voice, I really don't. What I do love is the release that comes from emoting through sound. There are great writers out there who are more effective than I am at channeling my sentiment and what a wonderful bonus to have it set to music. Why wouldn't I raise my voice and let that emotion ring through my private world, encased in a red steel box as I rumble down the highway? In this small place that is all my own, the emotion of each moment is forever affixed to the road where you poured out your soul in song and some nights you just need more road.
